Kristy's new wave dance a splash hit

For this dancer, the sound of the surf is music to the ears.  Kristy Quirk has brought ballet to the water, sparking a new wave of surfing known as surfdancing.  The Surfdancer director already has a following in Noosa, where she pioneered the sport, and is planning on bringing it to the Tweed.  Moves such as the 'coral', 'Laguna Bay dolphin', and the'flamingo' have been created, alongside classical dance actions such as the splits and ballets traditional stances, such as open fifth position.  Ms Quirk brought the unique moves to the Gold Coast this week, sparking a lot of attention at Currumbin Alley.  The qualifed classical ballet teacher and surf coach said she had combined her two loves to create the sport, which incorporates dance, surfing, yoga, gymnastics, twirling and costume.  Ms Quirk, 29, said surfing and dancing were similar.  "I can really see the parallels between the movements and the position of the arms and legs", she said.  Ms Quirk will hold a workshop in Tweed Heads over the September school holidays.
