A Surfdancer Interview
Director
What is Surfdancing and what are your thoughts behind the concept?
Surfdancing is an expression of love.
To surf, to dance, to love, to feel to express. Surfdancing is an expression of the joy of surfing through the medium of opening the body. The wave is the rythym and being connected with nature is the inspiration. Surfdancing creates a space in which you can be creative on a surfboard. Creativity with costumes, movements, props, music, art and choreography. Surfdancing can be done solo and in private or shared with people on the land, water, same wave or same board. There is so much that can be done on a surfboard while on a wave allowing for an endless supply of fun,“only a surfer knows the feeling”, and only a surfer can express this feeling. Some people feel comfortable expressing themselves on a surfboard and there are no limits to how you can express yourself. Surfdancing is surfing expressing dance and dance expressing surfing. Surfdancing is the merging of two beautiful art forms. Just as surfdancing expresses dancing while on a wave, surfdancing can be dancing expressing surfing. It is beautiful to dance in nature on the beach and in the water. It is fun to run, skip and jump along the waters edge with children, being the wind and the birds and the dolphins. We can honour nature and the animals by receiving and sharing our souls.
