Photos of 2nd term Surfdancing Workshop 16th April 2005

Saturday 16th April 2005 Noosa River Mouth hosted another successful surfdancing class.

Surfdancing offers surf education, ocean awareness, surfboard riding skills, dance, yoga, percussion, twirling, tandem, story telling , body surfing and stroke correction.   Surfdancers will surf, dance, swim, laugh, run   and make music at the waters edge right here at the birth place of surfdancing™ Noosa Heads.   Surfing techniques, manouveres and board handling skills are imparted through dance routines on the beach and in the water.   Surfdancers are taught to surf in a way that breaks away from the conventional learn to surf schools way of teaching surfing.   The first surfdancing™ course run by director Kristy Quirk proved to be a huge success in the in the ways the surfdancers learnt to surf.   Most amazing was the new surfing moves the dancers created on the surfboards.   Splits, back bends and syncronised group choreography on the waves was among some of the moves of this the emerging art form.   The future of surfdancing is almost inevitable for the mere fact that never before in the history of surfing have we had these huge numbers of people learning to surf, male, female and the very young.   As a result, there will be a segment of this learn to surf community that also study dance, gymnastic and other artistic mediums.   It is this segment of the community that will pioneer surfdancing™, just as how other sports incorporated an artistic interpretation into their discipline.   Perhaps this parallel can be seen in developments of swimming to syncronised swimming, sky diving to arial ballet, ice skating to ice dancing and fighting to tai chi.   Surfdancers is calling on dancers who surf to help pioneer this exciting breakthrough art form.   Surfdancers will gain strength, flexibility, confidence in the ocean, surfboard riding and handling skills, body surfing, dance, stroke correction, improvisation techniques and exploration into our relationship with the ocean.
